The concept has been done before, and it'll be done again, but boy do I appreciate horror games that take place on a ship. The folks behind Layers of Fear 2surely agree, as they've decided to swap out their tormented painter in a Victorian mansion for a Hollywood actor stranded aboard an ocean liner.
The setup: "Your past has helped to mold you into what you are, forced upon you the skills required to hone your craft. That same past has scraped deep furrowing scars into you, not on the outside where the world can see, but in a place buried so deep within that it has become shapeless. You push those memories down but let the experiences drive you into who, or what, you must play."
To a large extent, I'm expecting much more of the same walking-focused format as the last game, but that's not a complaint. I enjoyed Layers of Fear's brand of psychological horror well enough, and based on the new setting and protagonist, I'm even more invested in seeing what trippy visuals await us in this sequel. The first game fell right into that not-too-long, not-too-short mindspace for me.
Getting straight to the point, the summary confirms that we'll once again poke around the world and interact with objects to trigger spooky sights. "Is this part of the film, or are your memories playing tricks on you? Your world may change with the slightest of provocations, you must decide what is real."
These games tend to be at their best when you're tense with anxiety about what might lie ahead, but if you'd like a few more hints about what to expect, we've got 13 minutes of footage from the sequel.
We'll learn why we were cast in such a curious role once Layers of Fear 2releases on May 28, 2019 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Not gonna lie: I won't be shocked to learn there never even was a director.
